Artist Bio
Hello! I'm Violet Ruby, a 20-year-old undergraduate fine artist originally from Los Angeles. I'm currently in my third year at Parsons School of Design in New York City, majoring in Fine Arts with a minor in Gender Studies and Queer Theory.
I focus largely on sculpture and installation, with an interest in soft sculpture and textiles. My work serves as a conduit for personal storytelling, exploring the delicate balance between private and public identity. As a queer artist, my practice addresses themes of identity, gender expression, sexuality, and mental health. I find myself drawn to the tensions that arise when intimate experiences meet the outside world, particularly in how we navigate these spaces while managing societal expectations and internal struggles.
My work is grounded in questions about the body and the gaze, creating pieces that investigate the complex dynamic between self-perception and public presentation. I aim to create forms that transcend the body's physical boundaries, capturing a sense of control and autonomy over something larger than myself. Each piece is a reflection of my own personal journey, allowing me to reshape narratives around vulnerability and power through the material.
